If you’ve ever gone through it yourself or lived with anyone who has gone through “the change”, you know how difficult menopause can be for some women. It can affect not only the person going through it, but close family and friends as well. It’s a difficult time because the side effects are both physical and psychological.

There isn’t a way to stop it from happening so it is best to prepare for it as much as you can. It’s good to do some research so you know what to expect. For many the difficult most difficult time is the phase before menopause officially begins.

For some women perimenopause can begin as early as age 35, but for most women it won’t start until they are in their mid 40’s. It can last only a few years or more than 10 years. The severity of symptoms during this period can vary greatly from one woman to the next as well.

When the female hormones begin to alter the emotional and physical changes start to happen. This change can cause periods to become irregular, it can also cause weight gain. Weight gain is the way your body tries to hold on to some of that decreasing estrogen.

Dealing With Emotions During Menopause

Women who are going through menopause can experience both physical and emotional changes which are hard to deal with. In particular, the ever changing range of emotions can be quite distressing for many women. Among the most frequent emotions related to menopause are irritability and sadness.

Other out of control feelings include aimlessness, anxiety, aggression, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. And then there’s mood swings. This is one of the most frequently experienced menopause symptoms. You can end up experiencing any or all of these emotions in just a short period of time.

Even though it isn’t specifically a symptom of menopause, depression can sometimes take hold during this time in a woman’s life. Visit your doctor if your mood gets worse and you feel unable to deal with your situation.

As well, you’re likely to feel discomfort over all the physical changes taking place in your body. Women can feel helpless because their whole body seems to be out of control. Things like hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats and the end of your child bearing capabilities are some of the issues you’ll deal with.

And when you think it’s finally over, you start to experience the effects of post-menopause. This is also a time of physical changes. These changes will also involve some strong emotions; not just negative but positive too.

Living With Menopause

It’s a natural part of life and there isn’t a way to avoid it so it’s best to be prepared for it. Perimenopause is basically pre-menopause; it begins the transition to menopause. It refers to the changes that begin before menopause actually sets in.

For some women perimenopause can begin as early as age 35, but for most women it won’t start until they are in their mid 40’s. It can last only a few years or more than 10 years. The severity of symptoms during this period can vary greatly from one woman to the next as well.

Changes begin when the hormones start to fluctuate. This can cause erratic periods, meaning your cycle may become longer or shorter. This is also when women start to have a problem with weight gain related to menopause.

Hot flashes are probably one of the most talked about symptoms during this time. They are caused by diminishing levels of estrogen and can be feel quiet extreme for some women even causing feelings of weakness. A hot flash is literally an abrupt elevation in body temperature.

Tolerating Menopause

Going through menopause can be a challenging time for women. The amount and level of side effects can vary from person to person so for some women it can be extremely challenging especially since it has both emotional and physical effects on the body. As it can have such an impact it doesn’t only affect the woman going through it, it often affects her close family and friends as well.

Another common symptom, probably the most well know symptom, is the onset of hot flashes. A hot flash is a sudden increase in body temperature that is caused by decreasing estrogen levels. For some women these hot flashes can feel pretty intense and they can cause sweating or weakness.

How to Prevent Weight Gain After Menopause

Remember those days as your vital statistics would be as perfect as a bikini model in the front page of a women’s or men’s magazine. It would seem like ages ago particularly when you have reached the menopause phase. And then, bulges would be obvious in the stomach area and continue to increase in volume at about a pound each year. This may sound undesirable however it is a reality that every woman will experience.

Why do women who experience menopause find it so hard to maintain their low weight? There is a certain amount of people who think a change in the levels of hormone is the cause of weight gain. However what is more evident is the change in the mature person’s lifestyle.

Gone are the days as a woman is so full of energy to actively involve in various activities including exercise. The vigor though seems to have rearranged in the eating habit because the consumption of food becomes an amusing pastime. Moreover one ages lesser calories get burned while the body promotes the substitution of muscle with fat.

More fat in your body, the slower its metabolism as fat burns fewer calories than muscle. The increase in weight could also be caused by genetic factors whenever your relatives show the same tendency. Being slightly overweight may not be unpleasant for some however putting on too much weight can cause real troubles. You may know people who suffer from the consequences of obesity like osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease.
